Hmm: UN and Indonesian tourism organizations team up with the German government to urge Indonesian children to lobby tourism leaders to take climate change seriously?

Indonesia’s children asking for strong action against climate change
School kids from Pangandaran, Indonesia, have urged global tourism leaders to take climate change seriously. The 451 participants of the Mangrove Ambassadors Program voiced out through a selection of 24 “Letters to Leaders” how climate change is affecting their daily lives at one of the most popular tourism destinations in Indonesia. The Ambassadors Program is part of a joint project by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, supported by the government of Germany, to promote climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.

Bad Timing – The current panic over Churchill’s polar bears stems from a constant comparison of the polar bears from the mid-1980s (condition, population, etc) to the early 2000s data (up to 2003 ice season). The challenge here is that these charts sure make it look like the early 1980s were actually PEAK years for Churchill’s bears while the late 90s/early 2000s were a string of disasters.
Film profiles scientists in the front line of climate change | Voxy.co.nz
Excerpts from a new feature film that paints an intimate portrait of the global community of researchers racing to understand the world’s changing climate will be shown at Victoria University tonight.

Six years in the making, Thin Ice-the Inside Story of Climate Science, follows 40 scientists, including a number from New Zealand, at work in the Arctic, Antarctic, Southern Ocean, New Zealand, Europe and the United States. They talk about their work and their hopes and fears as they study changes in the atmosphere, oceans and ice sheets through measurements and computer modelling.

Tonight’s event is the beginning of a six week campaign to raise awareness of the opportunity for global audiences to see the film for free in April 2013.

Does warmist Elon Musk really care more about his children than the average climate realist?: He's got five, says he doesn't see them enough, and admits "I do have a nanny there, otherwise they'd kill each other"

SXSW: Elon Musk discusses hovering rocket, Mars and that NYT review - latimes.com
The one somewhat controversial moment came when moderator Chris Anderson asked Musk about his personal life, which Musk conceded was too busy, and his five children.

"Kids are awesome, you guys should all have kids. Kids are great," Musk said, before revealing that he doesn't see his children enough and often emails for work when he spends time with them.

"In the absence of that, I would not be able to get my job done," he said, drawing mutters from the crowd.

Perhaps sensing the audience's discomfort, Anderson said, "It's really not good for the children, it's really not good for the email."

Musk's response: "I do have a nanny there, otherwise they'd kill each other."

Can the world fight climate change and energy poverty at the same time?
Roger Pielke Jr., an environmental studies professor at the University of Colorado, has pointed out that the international community’s definition of “modern energy access” tends to be pitiful — it means providing people with a mere 2.2 percent of the energy that the average American uses.

The other thing this chart—or any chart—can’t do, even if correct, is predict the future. To repeat a central point: the basic relationship between greenhouse gases and temperature is non-linear, that is, there is diminishing warming from each additional molecule of GHG in the air. That’s why a doubling of CO2 alone will only get you about a 1.1 degree C increase in temperature. Which is not much to write home about; in fact, that amount of temperature increase likely has net benefits for the planet, as the IPCC itself has grudgingly acknowledged if you know how to read between the lines in their phonebook-sized reports. All of the action in the catastrophic scenarios depend on uniformly positive amplifications of the “feedback” effects, which this chart cannot help demonstrate.

Alternate New York Times Headline: ‘Global Warming Saves Civilization’ | RedState
Consider what a global ice age would mean. Cincinnati, OH and points north would be under a glacier hundreds of feet thick (not necessarily a bad thing, in the mind of some readers and SEC football fans). Agriculture would be impossible in North America. The planet could sustain a tiny fraction of its current population.

Even with a cooling of a couple of degrees Celsius, crop yields and growing seasons would shift dramatically for the worse. It would be increasingly difficult to feed the planet.

Given the choice between Global Warming and Global Cooling, give me Warming any day.

[David Archibald] What is also interesting is the 2.2° temperature rise from 7.8° in 1696 to 10.0° in 1732. This is a 2.2° rise is 36 years [in Central England]. By comparison, the world has seen a 0.6° rise over the 100 years of the 20th century. That temperature rise in the early 18th century was four times as large and three times as fast as the rise in the 20th century.

The significance of this is that the world can experience very rapid temperature swings all due to natural causes. The temperature peak of 10° in 1732 wasn’t reached again until 1947.

Absolutely essential to global warming alarm are tipping points. An extrapolation of the gentle warming we experienced in the last 150 years ago would not alarm anybody. So something that will derail the existing trend in a big way has to be predicted. And the usual prediction is that water vapour will build up and thus cause accelerated warming. Yet it was on that modest rise in the 1980s and 1990s that the whole of the greatest and most expensive scare in history was launched on its way, with all the terrifying political and economic consequences we see around us today. The very last people to recognise this, alas, will be our politicians, because they seem incapable of looking properly at the evidence. The price we are all increasingly having to pay for their gullibility is incalculable.

I guess that makes sense: Turns out that our national seashores lie at sea level, and thus any low-lying land nearby might get flooded if there is a storm surge or a high tide or both

Rebuilding After Sandy: Moving The National Park Service Forward With An Eye On Climate Change
Lying at sea level as they do, national seashores -- Cape Cod, Fire Island, Assateague Island, Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, Cumberland Island, and Cape Canaveral -- are helpless when the Atlantic is churned by storms, and to sea levels rising as the polar caps melt. Much of the land in those seashores is barely 1 meter above the current sea level, Stephen Saunders, president of the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization, said last August. That low-lying landscape makes them highly susceptible to overwash and higher sea levels, he said.

Sandy proved him correct, as Assateague Island sustained overwash in many areas and Fire Island was breached by the hurricane's punches.

In 2005, Revkin told us that the climate debate would "swing on" questions like "How much does one value the quality of a child’s adult life?"

Passions and Detachment in Journalism - NYTimes.com
[Revkin, 2005] But no one can ever expect to see a headline in The New York Times reading: “Global Warming Strikes. Seas Rise. Coasts Flood. Crops Fail. People Flee.” All of those things are likely to play out if the world does not find a way to stop emitting greenhouse gases as the global population goes to 10 billion or so and rich and poor nations continue to grow their economies. But they will be dispersed in time and geography, constituting the ultimate slow drip.

What this debate will swing on, ultimately, is the softer stuff –- things like evolving values. How much does one value the quality of a child’s adult life?

Green Goliath: "figures provided by Greenpeace show global income in 2011 as $313.4m"

Mark Lynas: truth, treachery and GM food
Lynas's metamorphosis gathered real pace when he started work on his 2004 book High Tide. It concerned the consequences of manmade climate change and involved him touring the continents seeking out its effects. This was a cause he was happy to be swept into: climate change made a perfect subplot for his grand narrative about the world of evil capitalism ruining nature.
...Lynas also experienced a more subtle realignment in his worldview. He'd been used to seeing the Green movement as the brave, scrappy underdogs. But the more he looked, the more little David began to resemble Goliath. "Just take the numbers," he says. "Greenpeace, the whole international group, is a $150m outfit [in fact, figures provided by Greenpeace show global income in 2011 as $313.4m]. Bigger than the World Trade Organisation, and much more influential in terms of determining how people think." For Lynas, the modern Green movement is one of undeniable force. It's changed the world "sometimes for the better", but not always.
