Bummer: Illegal logging allegedly causing monarch butterflies to freeze to death

Living on Earth: Messed Up Migrations
WILCOVE: The Monarchs face a number of problems. The one that’s gotten the most attention over the years has been illegal logging of the forests on that mountain in Mexico where they winter. So if you imagine the trees as providing a kind of thermal blanket for the butterflies, the illegal logging essentially means that we’re cutting holes in the blanket, and so when the cold weather hits, many of the Monarchs freeze to death.

Chronicle Probably Won't Ban Climate Change Deniers, Despite Petition
It will not, however, issue a fatwa against those climate change skeptics.

This marginal but pernicious group has become a White Whale for Berkeley author Steve Olson, who has launched an aggressive campaign to persuade mainstream newspapers to stop "reporting both sides." His new online petition, which garnered more than 1,700 signatures in about two weeks, urges the Chronicle to stop validating these "misguided conspiracy theorists" by allowing them to traipse through its letters section.

And according to Chron editorial page editor John Diaz, San Francisco's hometown paper is unlikely to follow suit.

"I don't think you can in any way suggest we're giving aid and comfort to the deniers," Diaz says.

WaPo: "fantasy" that any global climate deal will be legally binding; large-scale climate reparations unlikely; future of the climate decided in part by "off-the-record bilateral meetings"

How to make a global climate change deal - The Washington Post
negotiators need to drop the fantasy that whatever treaty they come up with will be legally binding.
...
Developing nations must also get real about the amount and type of climate-related money that they will get from the West. Europe and the United States are not going to fund an expensive system to compensate poor nations for effects they might ascribe to global warming. That’s because putting a price on the particular effects of climate change in one country or another is scientifically dubious. More important, Western nations are cash-strapped and their people won’t pay, anyway. Public and private financing should be mobilized for such things as stopping deforestation. But large-scale reparations are unlikely.
...
The future of the climate is not going to be decided at one big meeting, or by an ailing Europe and a weary United States ponying up massive sums of money. Barring some technological revolution that makes green energy extremely economical, it’s going to be decided piece by piece in national legislatures and committee meetings, in off-the-record bilateral meetings and Group of 20 summits, and by politicians pushed at home and abroad to act.

Warming departure in UAH lower troposphere satellite temperatures compared to RSS over the period 2005-2006 | Errors in IPCC climate science

Skeptic: Feds' latest global-warming report a 'shill' for funding - Climate Change Dispatch
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) examined warming that can occur over a period of years, not centuries, adding that the extinction of some species and melting ice in the Arctic Ocean is already occurring. Even so, Marc Morano of Climate Depot is skeptical.

"The organization [NAS] is virtually 100-percent dependent on government funding. So when they do a study like this – and they've done other studies in the past – you know the outcome of these studies before they do them," he argues. "When the president is advocating for a carbon tax, it's not too surprising that all the [government] reports are going to fall in line."

Morano says what shocks him the most about this report is that it "openly shills for more climate funding for its members."

IPCC planet-healer Pachauri "was on the board of Toyota"

And finally, there is Chairman Rajendra K. Pachauri, who holds degrees in economics and engineering. Ltd, and Independent Director of National Thermal Power Corp (who’ll burn 17 million tons of coal this year). He also founded Glori Energy, a company financed by KPCB (i.e. Al Gore & John Doerr) that recovers oil by injecting CO2 into reservoirs.

So what’s my point? That this is a conspiracy? No – although if I was so inclined, the fact that Pachauri was on the board of Toyota and Lee on the board of Hyundai, the two automotive firms with big investments in Sudan, would set my tin foil hat tingling before I’d even got to Pachauri’s Rockefeller connections.

Warmist Richard Alley blames CO2 for Katrina damage and Arab Spring

An Update on Risks of Abrupt Jolts from Global Warming - NYTimes.com
But, Katrina’s high waters just made it over the levee, and the difference between “just over” and “not quite over” proved to be a lot of billions of dollars and human disruption. The Arab Spring surprised many people, including some who had expertise, and while attribution of such an event to a particular cause is probably impossible, there are people (as written up in The Economist, for example) who link at least some of the causation to food prices, and there in turn people who link at least some of the food-price swings to climate change. It is easy to see such linkages occurring, and strengthening, in a greatly warmed future climate when many of our crops are already grown at temperatures above their optimum.

Coal industry accuses UN climate chief of 'ignoring reality' | Environment | theguardian.com
[World Coal chief executive Milton Catelin on UN climate scam chief Figueres] “She comes from a perspective where the only challenge in the world today is global warming,” he said. “I think what we say is there’s more than one challenge – other things are almost as important or equally important, such as global poverty and the need to maintain economic development.”

Catelin argues the role of coal in offering a cheaper solution to national requirements cannot be ignored, deriding UN efforts to double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix as “the politics of the warm inner glow”.

“The west feels good about itself by saying we’ll give you five hours [of energy] a day but it won’t solve your poverty problem – it’ll just make us feel good that we’re doing something about it,” he added.
