Bill McKibben: Why I'll Get Arrested To Stop the Burning of Coal
...There are dangers in this kind of strategy too. It could turn people off, make them think that global warming protesters are crazy hippies harkening back to the '60s. I don't mind hippies in the slightest, but when the writer Wendell Berry and I sent out the original invitation to this action, we asked that those who wanted to be arrested wear their dress clothes. And not just because it's serious business - but also in hopes of discouraging the hardcore anarchists and troublemakers attracted to such events, sort of in the way that convenience stores play classical music to keep folks from loitering outside.
But would they check for Weber grills next to official thermometers?: One climate service to rule them all
What exactly would a National Climate Service do? For starters, it would synthesize climate data that is currently fragmented across multiple NOAA programmes, the US Geological Survey, the US Department of Agriculture, and university research groups. It would also take a "user-oriented" approach, tailoring new research and data analysis toward urgent problems such as drought, flood risk, agriculture, and vector-borne disease transmission. Finally, it would attempt to improve predictions of climate-change impact at the local or regional level, where demand for information is growing.
There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch:  How do we really know that wind farms are less "harmful" to the climate than fossil fuel plants?
...The wind is harnessed using spinning blades, and the great irony is that, in order to satisfy conservation of energy, the wind must necessarily be changed in order for it to be converted into energy. This change can manifest itself in a different magnitude or direction of the wind. Having many of these windmills in a close array can, therefore, lead to complex turbulent relationships, with the potential to radically alter climate. Putting the windmills in the oceans does not solve our problems either because the turbulence causes the ocean water to “turn over,” and thereby heat up. So windmills could cause the climate change (albeit in a different form) that it is put in place to avoid.
