Mr Baillieu said Professor de Kretser was entitled to put his views publicly.

"I don't detect that people are running around outraged that David de Kretser has expressed an opinion (on global warming)," he said. "But I do make the point in general that when governors speak out they have to be careful not to take partisan positions, not to engage in divisive political debate and not to be representative of political parties."

He respected Professor de Kretser "for his common sense in being able to judge" where to draw the line.

The big hubbub has all been over the supposed warming of the planet over the last 100 years by 0.50C. That's right. All this hysteria has been over a measly half-degree increase in temperature. Interestingly enough all four of the major temperature tracking outlets around the globe, including NASA's GISS, showed that we had cooled in 2007 by anywhere from 0.65C to 0.75C. That's right. Not only have we erased the supposed warming of the last 100 years, we are actually cooling and experts predict the cooling trend will continue until at least 2015. And last year, 2008, was the coolest year in a decade.
