Coal stocks in particular jumped on earnings optimism as investors moved into the sector and out of retailers and local developers. Yanzhou Coal Mining rose 10.8 percent to lead the rally after the company reported a 227 percent jump in third-quarter profit, sparking optimism about earnings elsewhere in the sector.

Larger rival China Shenhua Energy, due to report later this week, gained 3.6 percent. China Coal Energy, set to report on Tuesday, was up 3.8 percent. "Coal names are also rallying on surging coal prices which are up 7 percent month-over-month in October and cold weather," said a trader at a Japanese bank in Hong Kong.
