The Iowa Senate approved a bill Wednesday proposed by three young students from Iowa City that is aimed at reducing methane gas linked to climate change by curbing food waste sent to landfills.

Senate File 306 was passed on a 26-22 party-line vote with Democrats in favor and Republicans against. It now goes to the Republican-controlled House where the odds are unlikely it will be approved.

The legislation was proposed by students Daniel Burgess, 13, his brother, Andrew Burgess, 11, and Ethan Trepka, 12, who testified in support of the bill at a Senate subcommittee meeting in February.
