These guys are amazing. It is one thing to be honored by the explorer's club, but to be honored by the North American Nature Photography Association, for a rasing this iconic bird from the dead, to further the careers of bird PAINTERS - that is truely amazing.
Those guys at North American Nature Photography Association, are the masters of irony.
Hey Tom did you ever get intouch with Hollon McKay at Auburn and ask about another follow up with Hill? Has she seen your blog??
Did we ever find out why some of the sorority girls have squirels were their faces should be?
An award for photography associated with the IBWO rediscovery!? Three posts down from here Jeffrey Wang starts his thesis on reanimating the IBWO by ending his acknowledgments with:
Lastly, I would like to thank what really spawned this project: one missing, possibly dead woodpecker in Arkansas and two canoers who couldn’t aim or zoom a video camera.
If the IBWO exists and there was anyone associated with the IBWO endeavor that had the photographic skills of your average suburban parent or teenage slacker then the IBWO issue would not have two major camps - one that is inspired by bad video and photos and another that is upset at the acceptance of such "evidence".
The above-named thesis and this blog exist because there is no one looking for IBWO who can aim or zoom a camera. Add the North American Nature Photography Association to the list of organizations that lost credibility by jumping in the IBWO trough with the CLO, TNC, et al.
Did we ever find out why some of the sorority girls have squirels were their faces should be?
That was a childish and cruel comment.
Back to the subject, it is hard to believe that a photography association would give an award to a couple of guys who have yet to get a photo of the species they are after!
I now see they received their awards at a Trade Show and that explains why this group would honor them. While most everyone can and should judge the motivations and scientific competence of Harrison and Gallagher, no one can doubt their marketing skills. People interested in selling nature rather than documenting it feel the two made a contribution and if your brains and morals are in your wallet then it is not hard to see them as heroes.
Just like the person who came up with the Pet Rock they made something out of nothing. People trying to make money in the nature art/photo field see them as heroes. A consumer public that bought Pet Rocks will buy the IBWO story.
"Pay no attention to the extinct woodpecker behind the curtain"
Did the commenter who thought the questions about the Auburn sorority girls was cruel see the "images that were referenced?" Why does the commenter think that it is cruel to ask what the hell the squirells mean?
Look, we have a lot of strange characters in this saga, and I personally feel that involving an Auburn sorority would enhance the discussion.

Sorry, I haven't tried--maybe you could try it?
Maybe the North American Nature Photography Association is actually a trade group and they're happy that camera sales to searchers are up.

I disagree. It exists because the IBWO doesn't and fertile imaginations and hope do.
