But now the Met Office is also warning people to wrap up warm to dodge a nasty chest as part of a pilot scheme offering patients personal weather warnings.

Patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will be called by the automated service to warn them of severe weather conditions over the following week.

The scheme, called Operation Cold Front, is to be launched in Stoke-on-Trent next month in the latest of a series of trials around the UK of the Met Office's COPD alert service.

Last winter, more than 400 patients died of breathing conditions in Stoke-on-Trent and thousands more needed hospital treatment. Under the scheme, which patients sign up to at their GP's practice, the Met Office triggers an automated phone before bad weather - which could increase their risk of illness - is expected.

The scheme will go live next Wednesday in 34 of the borough's 55 GP surgeries, including the Belgrave Medical Centre in Dresden, where 43 patients have signed up.

Dr Prasad Rao, senior partner at the surgery, said: 'This could be the difference between people surviving the winter or not. At a less severe level it will help safeguard their quality of life.
