Crackdown on anti-coal protesters - The Canberra Times
Federal and state Labor governments are cracking down on environmental activists who have targeted the coal industry in climate change protests.

At a meeting in Adelaide on Friday, federal, state and territory energy ministers agreed the existing penalties for trespass were insufficient to deter protesters who disrupted power generation and coal export facilities.

With the agreement of his counterparts, federal Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson has written to the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General ''emphasising the importance of protecting critical infrastructure against unlawful disruption''.

Mr Ferguson has requested that ''as a matter of urgency'' federal, state and territory attorneys-general undertake ''a formal review of penalties that should apply to unlawful disruption, noting the importance of energy security to the Australian economy and way of life''.
