Oceans of "acid" | COSMOS magazine
As global warming wreaks havoc on coral reefs, evidence is mounting that another problem caused by carbon dioxide is an even bigger threat. But is it too late to fix?

Danger, danger, Antartic ice shelf collapse could shift Earth’s axis of rotation. That sounds like something to worry about. I am going to put it above of the danger of the dog next door giving me rabies but below the danger of being killed by lightning.

The western ice shelf of Antartica is minute compared to the Earth. The Earth has a radius of 6370 kms. The ice shelf is between 1 and 2 kms thick. The Earth is made of iron and nickel with a density of about 7. The ice shelf is made of water with a density of 1. If the ice shelf covers 1 million square kilometers, then the Earth is 5 million times heavier than the ice shelf. Moreover the ice shelf is close to the axis of rotation of the Earth, so it has an even smaller proportion of the rotating kinetic energy of the Earth.

Given the level of dissent and skepticism on the subject, we ought not to let ourselves be panicked and stampeded into taking drastic and costly measures. Nor should we allow the claims about “scientific consensus” to cow us. First, remember, there is no such consensus; and, second, scientists are just as prone to peer pressure and groupthink as everybody else.
