Federated Farmers is calling for the emissions trading scheme to either be scrapped or substantially amended.

In a submission presented earlier this week to the select committee reviewing the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), Federated Farmers president Don Nicholson said New Zealand did not need an ETS to meet its Kyoto obligations.

In reality, if those representatives from Iowa are concerned about Iowa's industry and jobs, they will refuse to support climate schemes such as cap and trade. Under cap and trade, Iowa, which gets most of its power from coal, and utility users, including residents and businesses, will pay more for electricity than their counterparts outside the Midwest.

Any new green jobs will be created only by way of massive taxpayer subsidies. Ethanol, billed as a renewable resource for fossil fuels, has been a taxpayer boondoggle and environmental disaster.

If environmentalists such as Julian Boggs truly wished to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, they would be screaming from the rooftops their support for nuclear power.
