The truth is that these soothsayers of the environment think that they have a higher status than us and that somehow they are so valuable to society. They think they are exempt from following their own causes. I will not start taking their advice seriously until they themselves take it seriously.

Obama and these other environmental activists are hypocritical.

Other committee members who attended the White House meeting said Obama’s message was to move full steam ahead with climate change legislation and healthcare reform.

“The president talked about the importance of the moment. He said if we can point to accomplishments on healthcare and global warming, the American people will appreciate that,” said Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.).

Obama laid out four principles for climate change legislation in the meeting, according to Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.)

He said lawmakers must acknowledge that there will be a cost, and make sure everyone gets something back.

The legislation must be predictable, which is something business needs. Regional impacts must also be taken into account, and the legislation should cooperate with other countries.

“He said if Congress could get the Clean Air Act done in 1990, then we can get this done now,” Schakowsky said.

Climate change debate gets messy

The debate about climate change and how to deal with it - or dismiss it - is a shemozzle. Because of Australia's geographical isolation and its colonial history, the fault lines are not just between believers and non-believers, they run within those camps too. Among the believers, for example, the debate is about whether Australia should act before the rest of the world does - the well-worn view that we are but observers when it comes to world events.

Within that sort of mess, politics can generally be relied on to trump policy. And more often than not in our system, in those circumstances governments end up on top.
