Belgium reports strong increase in deaths | Radio Netherlands Worldwide
In an Antwerp newspaper, local funeral parlors report a 30 percent to 50 percent increase compared with the same period last year. Experts say the recent cold snap is probably to blame for the phenomenon. Elderly people in poor health are more likely to contract flu or pneumonia during a cold snap, often with fatal results. There has also been an unexplained strong increase in the number of suicides in Belgium.
