Cold wave in Tarai, 18 dead so far | The Kathmandu Post ::
KATHMANDU, JAN 04 - Cold wave has claimed at least 18 lives in the Tarai since last week. Twelve people died in last two days alone.

All the deaths so far have been reported from the districts of Saptari (10), Mahottari (6) and Dang (2). Most of the victims were the elderly and children.

Bay County Deputy Chief of Emergency Services Brad Monroe said when temperatures dip below freezing, it can get dangerous.

“During the harsh winter of 1989-1990, 26 Floridians died of hypothermia,” he said. “Florida homes often lack adequate heating and insulation and the Florida outdoor lifestyle leads to danger for those not prepared.”
Cold claims 120 lives, Kashmir Valley cut off
New Delhi, Jan. 4: Severe cold conditions in north India claimed 120 lives even as night-long snowfall in the upper reaches of Kashmir cut-off the valley from rest of the country for the second day on Monday.

Uttar Pradesh accounted for the bulk of 110 deaths this winter, while Bihar reported eight deaths and Haryana two.

Around 40 persons died in different parts of Uttar Pradesh since Sunday night as intense cold conditions continued to grip the state, officials said in Lucknow.

The cold snap killed dozens in India and Poland, threatened the orange crop in Florida, brought Siberia-like weather to Paris, brought day-to-day life to a virtual standstill in Beijing, pounded Italy with huge snowdrifts, and pushed temperatures down to minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit in Poland, the Times and other reports said.
