Pachauri’s comments come in the wake of the cancellation of his high-profile visit to the US. He was scheduled to be a keynote speaker at the Wall Street Journal’s ECO-nomics conference (March 3-5 in Santa Barbara) and at the energy conference CERAWEEK 2010 (March 8-12 in Houston).

The ice base on the western shore of Ellef Rignes Island in Canada will be home to a team of six scientists who will work on the ice protected by two guides armed with guns and bangers to ward off curious polar bears attracted by the smell of humans.

The three-strong team of explorers led by Ann Daniels, who took part in last year's survey, will face even more extreme conditions with wind-chill bringing temperatures down to -75C. An analysis of the data collected will be published in late 2010 or 2011.
1. Question: With temperatures that cold, why are we supposed to believe that the ice will be "thin"?   Without any measurements to back up this claim, how do we know that the ice isn't thicker this year than it was in 1922?

2.  If the ice is so thin near the North Pole, why was the river ice over 4 feet thick in this actual recent measurement from roughly 1700 miles to the south?
