Oregon Senate approves bill to cut greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks
Seventeen Democrats supported the bill. The Senate's 12 Republicans all voted against it, joined by Sen. Rick Metsger, D-Mount Hood, who said the bill doesn't "mention anything about economic vitality."

"We can certainly reduce greenhouse gases if nobody is working," Metsger said.

Republican speakers expressed skepticism about man made global warming, noted Oregon's tiny contribution to global emissions and questioned how emissions could be cut far below 1990 levels in areas such as Bend that have grown rapidly since 1990.

Sen. Jeff Kruse, R-Roseburg, called the bill "an unfunded mandate" on drivers. "We're going to tell you what you can drive and how you can drive it," he said.

Sen. Alan Bates, D-Ashland, was the only supporter of the bill to speak. He mentioned the climate change connection, saying that his view is "the problem with greenhouse gases is real." But he stressed that reducing auto emissions and sprawl would cut also road construction costs, reduce dependency on Middle East oil, improve air quality and protect farm land from development.  [Note: Even among Oregon liberals, is it no longer fashionable to push the global warming hoax very hard?]
