Meredith Dorneker, a University of Missouri graduate student, witnessed firsthand the plight of women living in the developing world during her time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru from 2006 to 2008. As a result of climate change, parts of the country are drying up, making it harder for women — who still are subject to traditional ideas of gender roles — to gather water for their families.

According to studies from the United Nations, 70 percent of the population in the developing world is female.
