The future of the Kyoto Protocol looks to be more uncertain than ever, after Australia and Norway issued a submission to the UN (PDF) calling for any new international climate treaty to be delayed until 2015, and the US gave the clearest indication yet that it expects the controversial Kyoto agreement to be axed.

According to reports in The Guardian, chief US negotiator Todd Stern now believes that the majority of leading industrialised economies are willing to oppose any extension to the Kyoto Protocol when the topic of a second commitment period is discussed at the upcoming UN climate summit in Durban.

"Of the major players in the Kyoto Protocol, my sense is that the EU is the only one still considering signing up in some fashion to a second commitment period," he told the paper. "Japan is clearly not, Russia is not, Canada is not and Australia appears unlikely."
