Fla. opens cold night shelters for homeless | Ocala.com

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Cold weather night shelters for the homeless have opened as Florida residents prepare for a blast of arctic air.

Churches and shelters in the Tampa Bay area, Orlando and Tallahassee, among other cities, are opening their doors for those who don't have a warm place to stay during the cold spell.

Hundreds of people have been advised to warm frozen water pipes up with a "hot water bottle" as sub-zero temperatures plummeted to -14c.

Households across the county have been struck by the freezing temperatures and have been given DIY advice to try and regain their water supply.

Police are warning motorists of "hazardous" driving conditions after freezing rain and snow led to dozens of crashes across East Anglia.

Essex Police said it had dealt with about 50 minor crashes since midnight on Sunday, with 20 reported in Suffolk and up to 30 in Cambridgeshire.

Paramedics were called to more than 50 collisions across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

Forecasters said temperatures dropped to -12.7C (9F) in Cavendish, Suffolk.
