Policy Based Evidence Making At Hansen U | Real Science

The Greenland ice sheet depresses the ground underneath it by thousands of feet, and thus sits in a deep depression. It can’t “collapse” or slide off into the sea. There are exposed fine grained sediment beaches all over the world, and some sit thousands of metres above sea level. Darwin observed this on his voyage. They have nothing to do with “collapsing” ice sheets, and don’t require scientists to rewrite history.

Hansen is training an army of nutjobs at Columbia to follow in his footsteps..

Examining the lifecycle of a bike – and its green credentials | Kat Austen | Environment | guardian.co.uk

When it comes to emissions from cycling, the carbon dioxide that comes out of your average pair of lungs is far less than that of a car or bus.

...Emissions from producing steel should not be ignored – the World Steel Association states that approximately 1.9 tonnes of carbon dioxide is produced for every tonne of steel, so a fairly light frame is still going to be responsible for over 5kg of CO2, even before it is manufactured into tubes, welded into shape or shipped.

Why not hold your breath while pedaling a wooden bike?

Bicycles are a drop in the bucket compared to windmills. If 1.9 tons of CO2 is produced for every ton of steel, how many tons of it are produced for the amount of steel in a windmill? How about the also-CO2-intensive concrete used in the installation of that same windmill?

Nevermind that both steel and concrete are extremely energy-intensive materials. From the mining to the smelting and kiln-firing to the fabrication, delivery, and installation, windpower is a losing proposition both regarding energy AND greenhouse gas production.
