An excerpt (the bold font is mine):
Laurie Fenwood, the ivorybilled woodpecker coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife Service’s Southeast region, said that state and federal officials met in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park in August to try to come up with a rating system to determine where the bird is most likely to have survived.
Fenwood said that large, undisturbed areas of bottomland hardwoods along rivers would be good candidates for searching. Areas of historical and recently reported sightings also would be logical places to look.
Although she said that some areas may have few reported sightings, “if people believe something has been extinct, they don’t tend to look for it,” Fenwood said.
How much the service will spend on the search is still being determined, she said. Last year, the Fish and Wildlife Service spent about $225,000 on the Arkansas search and about $350,000 on searches in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.
The service expects to have a recovery plan, with an emphasis on Arkansas’ Big Woods, to the public by the summer.
“This is a preliminary plan and can be informed by what we may learn this search season,” Fenwood said.

It doesn't appear that CLO's report of the 2005-2006 Arkansas field season, originally promised in summer 2006, will be available before the 2006-2007 search ends.
And didn't FWS originally promise to have a draft recovery plan in hand by fall 2006?

Code Ivory: 99% chance of survival
Code Red: 65% chance of survival
Code Black: 10% chance of survival
Code Purple: get real
“Documentation is a key aspect; obviously, everyone wants that million-dollar photograph”
Oh come on!! Let's not be coy about this. The Luneau video already brought in that much so that was the million dollar image for the agencies and CLO.
This squandering of funds is just amazing. They are going to use helicopters in the "search". That should be good for the habitat and for keeping a small carbon footprint.
But I am glad to see the people of Brinkley are still making some cash off this train wreck. At least the people who buy an IBWO hambuger get something for their money.

I like it. From his production website, the guy seems to have a good eye. This way there can be no excuses for blurry, out of range pseudopics. Just one more nail in the coffin.
Why does http://kylegerstner.blogspot.com
have a blog where he wants to keep his family and friends up to date on his activities? Isn't that what email is for? If he wants the public to know about the minute details of his life then he should not try to hide behind the "family and friends" rationalization. If he can't post about his "sightings" why would he post at all?
I know there are people who truly don't have lives and want to know how a given birder slept last night, what songs are going through their heads, etc. but is is clear that when someone living a mundane existence decides to keep a diary on a blog all they do is provide entertainment to those with even more mundane lives.
This sort of stuff shatters my ongoing attempts to believe that the majority of my conspecifics have both a clue and a life so if everyone could please just keep their personal lives personal I would be very happy.

Damn good point.

Clearly a person with nothing better to do.
Re: "http://kylegerstner.blogspot.com."
Shouldn't someone clue in ol' Kyle that he's got some identification issues to study before heading into the field. The photo caption says "An Imperial woodpecker is on the left." Clear photos like this make it possible to actually see the dorsal stripes, unlike the Luneau video, and to determine size, unlike the Luneau video. Just another Ivory-billed there, Kyle. Sorry. Thank goodness for him, this won't be an identification pitfall in northwest Florida...or anywhere.
Nope, I'd say it is an Imperial. The white stripes don't reach up onto the sides of the head. It would be charming though if the searchers finally managed a photo of the Florida woodpeckers and they'd turn out to be Imperials.
Who knows?!
An IMPERIAL Woodpecker is on the left?........ah hah!!!!....................it all makes sense now.........The Bay of Pigs Incident......"Cuban" Ivorybills.....Florida...................blurry video in Arkansas..Congaree National Park...spit-shined contact lenses...ghillie suits...money laundering....of course...the evil bastards...
My God!!!......the horror, the horror.
I'm not really sure where the Skunk Ape fits in nor the French.....wait....the French aren't involved in this......or are they?

Two words: Luneau video.
Say what you will, but the guy takes some very nice photos. Looks like he's also been involved in prairie chicken and shorebird work. So he's a little optimistic. Give him a break.

Losers don't get breaks. It's the nature of the world.
