Wow: Google planet-healers bought 2.3 million gallons of sharply-discounted fuel for their fleet of private jets since early 2009?

Google Founders' Jet Fleet Loses a Pentagon Fuel Perk - WSJ.com
Google Inc. founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin may have to dig deeper to operate their fleet of private jets, after the U.S. Department of Defense ended a little-known arrangement that for years allowed the tech billionaires to travel on sharply discounted jet fuel bought from the Pentagon.
...
Although Moffett is closed to most non-government traffic, NASA in 2007 signed a deal allowing H211 LLC, a private company representing jets owned by the Google founders and Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, to base aircraft at Moffett. The fleet recently included seven jets and two helicopters.
...
In total, H211 has bought 2.3 million gallons of jet fuel since early 2009, according to Pentagon records viewed by The Wall Street Journal, paying an average $3.19 per gallon.
...
The main jets in the fleet—a Boeing 767, Boeing 757 and four Gulfstream V's—have departed from Moffett a total of 710 times since 2007, FAA records show. The most frequent destinations were Los Angeles and New York, but the planes also flew 20 times to the Caribbean island of Tortola; 17 to Hawaii; 16 to Nantucket, Mass.; and 15 to Tahiti.

Healing the planet: Al Gore's Apple and Al Gore's Google exploit cheap coal power

Dirty data: The Internet's giant carbon footprint
...your Internet search has just helped kill the planet. Depending on how long you took and what sites you visited, your search caused the emission of one to 10 grams of carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.
...
Apple’s 46,000-square-metre iDataCenter is set to open in North Carolina this spring with a price tag of $1 billion U.S. It will use an estimated 100 megawatts of power – as much as about 100,000 Canadian homes.

Apple’s mega-facility is part of a cluster of gigantic new data centres coming on line in North Carolina that are powered largely by cheap and highly polluting coal power. Google has a 44,000-square-metre data centre in the state that will eventually consume an estimated 60 to 100 MW.
...
Google threatened to abandon the project if the state legislature didn’t pass a special law to exempt server farms from sales tax on electricity use.
...
But Google chose Lenoir for more than just some nice hand-outs. It also wanted cheap electricity for those power-hungry servers.
...
It just so happens that the state’s electricity is also some of the dirtiest in the country. Only four per cent comes from renewable sources like wind or hydroelectric power.
...
Nearly two-thirds of the state’s electricity comes from coal.

Financial Aspect of Google’s Environmental Goals Grows - NYTimes.com
“We want to make money, and we want to have impact,” said Dan W. Reicher, director for climate change and energy initiatives at Google.org.
...
Google has gone to great lengths to conceal how much electricity it uses in its data centers. For instance, Google agreed to build a $600 million data center in Oklahoma only after the State Legislature passed a law exempting public utilities from disclosing the energy use of their largest customers. Google has also vowed to be carbon neutral, but unlike its rival Yahoo, for instance, it has refused to reveal its overall carbon emissions.
24/7 Wall St.: Google (GOOG) Burns More Money To Save The World
Leaving aside its huge and immensely profitable search business, Google (GOOG) has managed to lose money in almost every other business it has started or bought. YouTube is probably at the top of that list.

Google's latest foray into burning cash is to help improve the energy grid and cut the cost of electricity. According to The New York Times, "Google is now considering large investments in projects that generate electricity from renewable sources."

The sharp drop in Google's shares can be placed at the feet of concerns that the company spends too much money and that its margins will be compressed by any slowdown in the advertising business unless it cut costs. That has helped push the search company's stock to a level where it has not traded since late 2005.

If the management at Google is anything, it is smart. Perhaps that is university smart and not intelligence based on practical experience

Ethanol and solar stocks have been wounded by falling oil prices, dropping government subsidies, and rising commodities prices. Shares in solar giant Suntech (STP) are down from a 52-week high of $90 to about $12. Biofuels operator Verasun (VSE) has fallen from $17.75 to $.70.

Doing good has some limits when the shareholder's money is involved. The two founders of Google and its CEO have billions of dollars in personal wealth. Let them put up the capital to make the world "green".

Google's Brin plans joyride into space in 2011

Only completely "green" power will be used, correct?
The first private space flight to the International Space Station will blast off in 2011 in a deal with the Russian space agency, the US company Space Adventures said Wednesday.

Google cofounder Sergey Brin will occupy one of the two available seats for "private space explorers," the company said, noting they were "offered to not only individual explorers but also to businesses, organizations, and institutions."

Little hybrid car for you; personal Boeing 767 for us

Here:
Larry Page, Google’s billionaire co-founder, is set to marry his girlfriend, Lucy Southworth, on a tiny Caribbean island this weekend… The New York Post reported on Wednesday that 600 guests will be flown on private planes to the wedding on Branson’s Necker Island.
Also note this:
A photo-op of Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin plugging-in a hybrid car was part of the search engine giant’s June announcement promising carbon neutrality by 2008. But how this PR-fluff squares with the so-called “Google party jet” — Page and Brin’s gargantuan personal Boeing 767, which burns about 1,550 gallons/hour — is any one’s guess.
