The land data are robust as they result from all the countries doing different things. The issue about satellites and SSTs is that they result from few sources, so when biases affect things they permeate the whole dataset. On land, it is only Russia that is large enough to screw things up! Look out for a paper in Weather fairly soon or urban effects. I'm sure this will stir things up when it appears, if anyone still reads Weather! I did this as I kept on hearing so much rubbish talked about urban effects in London. Cheers Phil At 09:18 0

Bottom line - the no upward trend has to continue for a total of 15 years before we get worried. We're really counting this from about 2004/5 and not 1998. 1998 was warm due to the El Nino.

"Before we get worried" over what? Loss of funding? An ice age? Their jobs? The reason to redistribute wealth from the "North' to the 'South' fizzling out? The leftist's and technocrats dream of a global socialist utopian hell going up in smoke? What possibly could they be worried about?
Wise to post anon. considering who these people are. We have everything to worry about. Facts do not matter. There is a variety of reasons people have for advancing mann-made global warming/climate change/climate disruption. One group says "The theory is sound, the data haven't caught up yet 'cause the heat is hiding somewhere." These are the true believers, the environmental extremists. There is the group of big government statists that want and need to control the masses. Then there are those that directly benefit from wealth transfer. I believe this is one explanation NASA/NOAA and other government agencies around the world have been lowering historical temperatures in order to buy more time to benefit from the scheme. Nothing is going up in smoke. This is far from settled.
