It is high time our Government reviewed its energy policy. It would be silly enough to commit ourselves to a unilateral target of 80 per cent carbon reduction even if the planet was warming in line with predictions.

Now that it is becoming increasingly clear the whole policy is based on a faulty premise of dangerously rising temperatures it is dafter still.

A former Labour chancellor called his party's 1983 manifesto "the longest suicide note in history". However convincing the case may have seemed at the time, if we want a strong economy again it will have to go.
