CongressDaily - White House Pushing On Climate Bill
While Democratic leaders agreed this week to bring the bill to the floor Friday, Speaker Pelosi gave herself some wiggle room as the lobbying continues.

After noting Republican efforts to slow down consideration of spending bills, she said: "I'm hoping we can do it Friday. But I don't know how many votes we'll have tonight. We have to get our appropriations bills done -- at least two a week."

"We will take it to the floor when it's ready. That is what I've always said," she said. A Pelosi aide later clarified, "We intend to have a vote this week."

Overall, Waxman echoed other Democratic leaders' confidence. "I don't know the numbers, but we're going to get there," he said.

Among Democrats, Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota., a co-chairwoman of the 51-member Blue Dog Coalition, said Wednesday she cannot support the bill.

Of her Blue Dog colleagues, she said, "Many are skeptical; many are seemingly unmovable off of their 'no' positions."

Roy Innis, CORE's national chairman, said "the underlying goal of this legislation is the morally repugnant concept that constricting sources of domestic energy and raising energy costs is a good thing because it will force conservation by consumers. That elitist view assumes that poor, working class families have the ability to bear that 'social cost.'"

CORE spokesman Niger Innis said several congressional offices Wednesday called to confirm that that was in fact the group's position. "We got a lot of 'wows'," Innis said.
