The US could walk away from signing a deal on climate change unless China agrees to transparency on emissions reductions, according to US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The US has promised to contribute to a fund worth 100 billion dollars per year by 2020 to help poor countries cope with climate change as part of an open and transparent deal. Nevertheless, a lot of what Mr. Hansen said yesterday made sense: the Copenhagen process is hypocritical and should scrapped; cap and trade is a crock, from which the only people likely to get rich are Goldman Sachs and JpMorgan Chase; current negotiations are all about paying off developing countries so that developed countries can continue emitting greenhouse gases.

Indeed, environmentalists compound the error by subsidising technologies of their choosing (e.g. windfarms) so newly discovered alternatives are prevented from normal entry into, and success in, market displacement of existing technologies.
If an agreement is not reached, negotiations would continue into next year with the hope that it can be finalized before a meeting next summer in Mexico City. The idea was initially proposed by former vice president Al Gore and seemed to be gaining steam amongst the delegates. Some of joked that he suggested the sunny location in the summer in order to avoid a risk of the Gore Effect striking.
