House seeks to leave Western Climate [Fraud] Initiative - Salt Lake Tribune
The Utah House voted Wednesday to urge the governor to back out of the Western Climate Initiative, a cooperative of states and Canadian provinces that some lawmakers say is working toward a cap-and-trade carbon economy that will cost their coal-fueled state too much.

The resolution passed 52-18 and now goes to the Senate.

Senate Majority Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has instructed Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) to produce a revamped climate bill as soon as possible, according to sources, a task Kerry intends to accomplish within two weeks.

"I'm more optimistic now than I have been in several months," said Carl Pope, the executive director for the Sierra Club, an advocacy group. Pope added "there are several different pathways" a Senate climate bill could take in order to reduce the country's carbon output.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds Reid earning 39% to 41% of the vote against any of four GOP challengers.

Any incumbent who is earning less than 50% at this juncture is considered vulnerable. Reid, who is seeking a fifth term, received 61% of the final vote in 2004.
