Winter Takes Its Toll On Area Wildlife - Omaha News Story - KETV Omaha
Dead fish are popping up on area lakes as the ice begins to thaw. Experts say it’s something they expected.

"You get a longer winter like we had this winter with a lot more snow cover, there is going to be a lot more mortality,” said Daryl Bauer with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “You throw all that snow on top of the ice, that is just another blanket that reflects more sunlight, then you are more likely to get low oxygen.”

The lack of sunlight means aquatic plant life isn’t producing oxygen and the fish are literally suffocating, said Bauer. He said it happens every year, but this winter’s arctic-like conditions could mean even more fish kills.
