The painted turtle has survived for some 15 million years in lakes and slow-moving streams across North America, where it is thought to be the most widespread native turtle on the continent.
But global warming may wipe the species out, scientists say.
A rise in temperatures of about 1 degree Celsius is all it would take for the painted turtle – whose sex is determined by temperature after the mother lays her eggs – to become 100 percent female, and soon thereafter to die out.
