Ok, so we've got some unconfirmed reports that an Ivory-billed Woodpecker has inexplicably chosen to live in an area where "dead trees are sparse". Should we wait for confirmation, or should we immediately start killing trees that may attract beetles that may eventually provide food for the potential Ivory-bill(s)?
From my perspective, this is a slightly surreal scene. Now we've got The Nature Conservancy intentionally killing up to 200 healthy trees in Arkansas.
This small example illustrates that the IBWO controversy is not just a philosophical debate--there are real-world effects as well.
