Gallagher speaks

There is a new interview with Tim Gallagher here (the bold font is mine):
...But I think it's about more than the bird. My hope is that if the ivory-bill does exist, we can generate new awareness of what these swamp forests are and were.

Wow! It strikes me as a intelligent, thoughtful, piece with an informed interviewer working carefully to bring out Gallagher's message... and the language on both sides is both optimistic and painfully cautious.

Reading between the lines, possibly inaccurately, I find it both encouraging and sad.

I'm going to be optimistic myself, and read this as a gracious gesture toward reasonable and grounded discussion. If this interview can be seen as a trial balloon for a more cautious presentation of the evidence in the future, then personally, I'm inclined to applaud the effort.

Is Gallagher saying that the IBWO has been extirpated since he saw one in 2004 or that he no longer believes his own observations? I'm not clear on this point
