"Now, I foresee more motels, restaurants"

I predict that this article (dated 5/14/06) will fail to win a Pulitzer Prize.

You know, if the Federal Government supports it, then it must be true.

Here is the motto of the Federal Government, give me the authority and I'll find a way to spend it.

Truth and Facts - gimme a break.

The biggest losers in this whole thing will be the folks of Brinkley Arkansas. In a couple years, all the eccentric bird watcher types that like to spend lots of money will be long gone. They won't be suffering though...they will just be spending their dollars somewhere else. it is a shame for the people of Arkansas where the jobless rate is high and the thought of the IBWO in their area was some hope for their suffering economy.

sucks.

Better yet...Tim Gallagher, Bobby Harrison, and company should donate all the proceeds from their books, speaking engagements and interviews to these poor folks in Arkansas.

Yeah...right!! These guys are milking the mis-identification of a PIWO to get rich. I know that was not their original intent. No way. They really thought they saw the IBWO. But come on after two years, It is obvious a terrible mistake was made!! As a consolation prize these guys are continuing to reap financial benefits and be in the lime-light of the birder world.

typical human nature. If it was me I would admit I was wrong and try to help undue this mess, especially for the sake of the folks at Brinkley.

The good people of Brinkley will be able to rejoice along with all of us on May 20th.

Have patience. Salvation is close at hand.

Why is the Cornell zip code income so low; are the college and graduate students driving down the income?

Living in a major college area myself;

your typical tenured academic drives a 60,000 dollar Volvo, lives in a 600,000 dollar home and sends the kids to a 60,000 a year college (including living expenses) amd complains constantly about the rich Republicans ruining the country.

BTW - Happy Mother's Day to all you Skeptics.

It's a younger population for Ithaca

Ithaca zip code
Median age: 25.0

Brinkley zip code
Median age: 37.5

And of course, although biologists will earn a living talking about the importance of biodiversity, the ethnic diversity of Ithaca is far less than Brinkley. But bird people appear to like things that way.

And thanks for the Mother's Day greeting. Important to remember that even Skeptics have mothers and we love them. It's only our fathers that we're skeptical about.

If I may, Tompkins has a higher % of people living below the poverty level than the NY average. On the farms, it is very hard to make money - ask anyone you know who farms dairy cows. Once you leave the farm there are very few places to make money - Cornell being the best. Competition for those jobs is steep, and lots of people flounder in that netherword of the urban poor surrounded by a poor rural area.

Remember, New Haven is often in the top 20 poorest cities, and Yale lives happily behind the Ivy covered walls. The reasons are different, but methinks Ivy doesn't often spend their $$ helping the locals.
