I just listened to this 13-minute NPR segment for the first time. The segment is dated July 6, 2005.
To me, one year later, it's quite a sad story.

It truly is sad Tom. Either all these highly educated researchers are totally incompetent - or we've been had. Which one is it?
Even sadder is the following story which I have attempted to compose into "bona poetry". It goes like this:
Hi my name is Jean,
my last name rhymes with starling;
they say I'm quite a darling,
And I think it's really keen.
Now I ain't never had no learning,
but for 25 years this woodypecker I beenuh yearning;
0h that deep dark secret to tell,
Now my duck hunting buddies have all told me to go to hell.
They made me conservationist of the year,
All those professor fed me a big steer;
I thought it all was pretty cool,
Cause I ain't never been to school.
My goodness I'm such a sleuth,
for if they only knew the truth;
They'd want to know why I kept it quite,
For a quarter century but now it's come to light.
Lately it's been a controversy anew,
about whether Woody exists on Bayou DeView;
You know I'll be proven right,
Even though ain't no ivorybill in sight.
Oh My, oh my what have I done,
I waited till there's only one ivorybill left;
and now we just can't find him,
it appears there's been a theft.
Was it my eyes playing tricks on me,
or just plain wishful thinking?
Oh if only I had come forth sooner,
Champagne we would be drinking.
Now I ask you dear Jean this very day,
What would Todd, Dewayne, & Danny say?
If they knew you let the ivorybill lay,
And lied to ole TJ .......

Quoth the Brinkley resident, "Just a small pteradactyl flying out of a tree"
That pretty well says it all.
