Hey Tom,

Look what I found! It was in a dusty old
anthology of verse about life in academia…

p.d.

The Ravin’

Once upon a midnight dreary
While I pondered weak and weary,
Troubled sleeping in my study,
Amongst tomes of southern lore;
I was forced to take a stock in
What I thought to be a knockin’
Yes a Knockin’! Double Knockin’!
At my humble office door.
A distinctly double knockin’
Double knockin’ at my door.

Whilst thou haunt me evermore?

Thus I knew the apparition
In the hallway sought admission,
So the door I opened slightly
Then I opened it some more.
This it took as my assentin’
And it entered double kentin’
Yes it’s kentin’! Double kentin’!
At my open office door.
Wary warning, double kentin’
Double kentin’ at my door.

Plaintive kentin’, “Nevermore.”

Though the ghostbird stood before me
I could see it only vaguely…
Spying barely seven pixels;
Shift from six and then to four.
And with that it ceased it’s tappin’.
No more callin’, only flappin’.
Madly fleein’. Fleein’, flappin’
Down the empty corridor.
Much too quickly fleein’, flappin’
Down the dim lit corridor.

Crieth the ghostbird, “Nevermore.”

Heartless phantom thus eludes me.
Fragile memory deludes me.
All I seek is sweet communion
With the giant men of yore.
Known like Tanner? That would cheer me!
But the bird is far too wary.
Oh so wary! Very wary!
Unlike Tanner found before.
Clever cunning, very wary,
Unlike Tanner found before.

Mocketh the ghostbird, “Nevermore.”

Damn that Nelson! Damn his minions!
Can’t contain their vain opinions.
Thus in verse they state their thesis,
Ever wilder than before.
Their incessant misbehavin’
Has now driven me to ravin’
Yes, to rantin’ and to ravin’
I’m reduced forevermore.
Not to publish, but to perish,
Merely ravin’ evermore.

Quoth the ghostbird, “Evermore.”

That was good, PD.

Could someone post this to Fitcrow's door when he is out? Maybe on Remsen's door at LSU also?

It's time for all the gutless ornithologists and "bird ID experts" out there to stop mumbling and grumbling. RemFitzsenPatrick has had every opportunity to back off and say "we blew it." But all they do is continue to up the ante everytime they are attacked. How about passing a resolution at the fall NAOC stating the position that the Luneau video is not an IBWO, and demanding retractions of certain pubs? I don't understand why this should be allowed to just die down without some serious repercussions for the main proponents.

I believe that many of you are afraid that somehow, somewhere, a real IBWO is going to be found and then you'll look like idiots. A real rediscovery is not something to be afraid of, it's something to hope for, actually. But the AR "rediscovery" is a complete sham and should be treated as such.

All the discussion about the April '05 "leaks" is so ironic: people leaking gossip about something that they heard about that ends up being poorly documented and likely untrue in the first place. Anyway, who cares about the leaks! Focus on the misidentified video, the crappy cluster of sight records, and the driving force of RemFitzsenPatrick.

My initial suggestion for a CLO retraction: "We bleeped up!" I'll offer a bounty for the best retraction posted. First prize is a copy of The Grail Bird. Second prize is TWO copies of The Grail Bird.

What the carpinterio wants to know is the timeline behind this IBWO in fitzcrow's mustache?

This is the funniest thing the carpinterio has seen a good while.

Did I miss it? Has it been posted before? Do I have to credit it when I post it on my office door?

this says it all folks ...

"Has it been posted before?"

Yes--back in May, some anonymous person posted that picture in the comment section here.

"The Ravin' ", that's brilliant!

<humor off>
Discussion of the leaks is looking for sign posts on the road to fraud. Why is it that Fitz can't get the acceptance date straight? Does it offend AOU members that Fitz presented at the plenary that the Science paper was accepted on April 25th before "The Leak," contradicting the acceptance date of April 27th in the paper, as well as the acceptance date of April 26th in the Auk rebuttal? Does it offend AOU members when Fitz attacks Jackson on points when the "errors in fact" are Fitz's? Shoddiness of the research and publications chips away at Fitz et al.'s credibility. Where is the scientific rigor and integrity that one would expect from what is supposed to be the premier ornithological institution in the U.S.? It's a mockery of that reputaiton.

I also seem to have missed the moustache post. I read references about it but I didn't know what they were talking about.

But now I can clearly see the black trailing edge of the moustache "pecker". So it's clearly not an IBWO.

So you see, if you can use a blurry picture to tell a moustache from an Ivory Bill then why not an Ivory Bill from a Pileated? Such as in the Luneau video?

Take that! Skeptics! And you thought you had us. Hurruuummpphhh.....

Tom:

The carpinterio remembers posting a link to the photo of "Fitz in the Swamp" along with links to shots of Douglas MacArthur wading ashore in the Phillipines, and a shot of General Custer ... but I never saw the one of the IBWO in the mustache.

Does this makes me like David Lanneau, unknowingly in possession of the proof of the bird, untill it is pointed out to me by the experts?

I am shocked, shocked, that life has imitated art thusly, could you please link us to the original post wherein the IBWO mustache was found?

Whoever did it is a muy loco ...

A link to this photo was posted in the first comment here .

Well that link from may 20 doesn't click through to anything ... but it is a shame that it has taken till now for the Carpinterio to see the one photo that sums up this whole affair.

All of our nattering and sputtering, captured in one image.

The author of that photo montage is the "Esceptico Grande" ... no one can top that piece of satire.

From here it can only be second rate movies, attempts to recapture the moment and a descent into drugs and other self destructive behavior.

Genius like that is achieved only once in a life time ... too bad it wasn't hyperlinked at the time ...

I dare a birding magazine to run that photo ... it deserves to be enjoyed by everyone not just the Skeptics ... even if you are a beliver, the torture of fuzzy video frame captures merits a little satire at this point.

Heck the NYT should run that photo ... it is world class stuff.

World class stuff.

That putfile.com link still works fine for me. When cutting/pasting it into your browser, make sure you've got the whole thing (the last two characters of the link are "f5").
