Sparling still wowing 'em?

An excerpt from this 7/25/06 blog post:
We left just in time to make it to the Twilight Prayer service at the chapel. It was kinda nice. A little bit-o-God in Tennessee. After that was over, we stayed to hear the nightly speaker. **drum roll please** Our guest lectioner for the night was none other than Gene Sparling. Who, you ask? He's the guy who first spotted the ivory-billed woodpecker back in 2004 in Arkansas. Dang was I excited! We were there for almost 2 hours. Even RAH was rapt. I wish you all could have heard him speak as well. It was amazing.

I have an off topic question for Tom. I keep seeing reference to the "kent calls" being unreliable because of Blue Jays. Recently, I heard that Cornell previously admitted that they couldn't rule out that the calls were from tape playback from other searchers. Do you know if this is true and if it is, do you have the background on it?

I believed the CLO when they said that they could easily rule out tape playback due to the distinctive tone and spacing of the historical recorded IBWO calls. Unless the historical recordings of IBWO calls used for tape playback were altered deliberately and very cleverly I suspect that the CLO could easily distinguish them from newly recorded sounds. I'm sure we all can agree that the CLO scientists are very intelligent and technologically savvy people, although their overconfidence in technology certainly did lead them astray when they analyzed the video.

No, I do not agree.

I saw Luneau give his presentation. Sweet Audubon group of older men and women. When he showed the video they all mumbled...."yes, too much white...".

He had them in the palm of his hand. What do you expect? Such groups are followers not leaders.

I believe they said they could rule out playback but not Blue Jays.
