Here; seems as plausible as that old "Area 51" rumor.

With sincere apologies to El Carpinterio Real.

Repeata por favor: These people are absolutely crazy. I continue to be amazed at this lunatic fringe in the Bird Forum and/or Blogging World. Are these college kids, is it a big joke, has Oliver Stone taken over the Birding Community. Where do these crazy stories get started?

9 pairs of IBWOs hiding out in the Florida Panhandle.

Oy vey!

Having been directed to BINAC's website, should we assume that you condone the Axolotyl versus Guppy affair?

Surely this is nothing more than some not very funny parodist yanking chains.

If true, however, it means I'd better plan on owning up to my own project. Begun by my great grandfather Les Hausmann in 1924, the project has entailed the continuous breeding of ivory-billed woodpeckers in a predator and parasite-free environment, i.e., an isolated compound in Northern California (don't even think of trying to find it). Starting with two birds back in 1924, we now have 23 (16 males, 7 females) healthy specimens ranging in age from 6 months to 18 years (!!!) with at least half of the females healthy and continuing to breed.

The trust set up by my great grandfather, unfortunately, requires that the birds be kept caged and ultimately destroyed within one month of the discovery of a breeding pair of wild IBWOs.

To the tune of the Teddy Bear's Picnic song:

If you go out in the woods today
You're sure of a big surprise
If you go out in the woods today
You'd better go in disguise

For every 'bill that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because
Today's the day the Iv'ry-bills have their picnic

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They'll hide and seek as long as they please
Today's the day the Iv'ry-bills have their picnic
