I might just volunteer. looks like fun....2 weeks of searching in the swampy forest of the south in the winter...bound to see many birds even if you don't find the IBWO.
This is so sad. Cornell can't even get the full name of the IBWO spelled correctly on their volunteer agreement form: it's spelled Ivory Billed twice and Ivory-Billed once!
Speaking as someone that volunteered last year, it was somewhat fun, but it was also kinda depressing. The habita (on the White NWR) was not all that impressive - sure there are pockets of nice stuff, but there are similar pockets throughout the SE. After the first few days, I realized that so much of the area has been covered and recovered by searchers and hunters and fishermen, that a hidden population or even a breeding pair is pretty damn unlikely.
But, if you can use it as an excuse to get away for 2 weeks of birding, go for it. Just don't expect to see an IBWO. You may see a large black and white woodpecker and if you see it for less than 3 seconds, then you too can have an 'interesting encounter'.
