Ivory-bill Researchers Forum

...now online here; evidently set up by Donald Kimball, aka Wompoo Dove.

From the "About Us" page (the bold font is mine):
Lastly, and most importantly, our position is not one of debate about the species’ current existence. There are many sites and blogs already that can be used expressly for this purpose. If your belief is that the species existence is still in question then this site is not a good fit for you. We believe our energy is far better spent in the field or dialoguing with others who spend their valuable time and resources to help uncover the mysteries surrounding the Ivory-bill

"Dialoguing"? I was watching the fifth season of The Soprano's earlier this week and there is an episode where a fundie preacher stops by Tony's hospital room and tries to convert him. When Tony's family members come by and ask what's going on, the preacher says that they're "dialoguing."

I think "dialoguing" is shorthand for "pretending to have a serious conversation when, in fact, nobody is interested in learning a damn thing."

How appropriate that the website was created by "Subdreamer"

"Dialoguing" is inexcusably pretentious Newspeak

Why are the "Helpful Links" only to The Nature Conservancy, US Fish & Wildlife, and, most prominently, "The photography of Ronnie Gaubert." This hopeless commercial promotion continues to drag this whole mess deeper, never mind the dialoguing" (sounds dirty to me). The principals--Bobby, Timmy, and Fitzcrow--could put a stop to this. But noooo, self interest supersedes that. Absolutely disgusted.

National Geographic article this week (December issue) by Mel White gives an inside look at things. Mel is objective, but that means overlooking damage to the credibility of observational evidence and trust in just plain common sense by birders. It almost seems to sanction the idea that this has been "okay" (and Mr. Sibley says that too). The article is neither bad nor good. I suspect the NGM editors made him toe the line on this one, but the message is can't we all just get along. Further disgusted at the loss of integrity.

Now, now. No need to take after them for this site. The web contains millions of havens of incestuous amplification.

Maybe they'll be trading some real information viewed with a critical eye. (Not holding my breath.) Maybe it's simply a place for people like Fishcrow and Mr. Guppy, to protect them from reality. Let's all just watch it from the outside and see what it turns into.

Tom -

Did you get this month's National Geographic magazine, last article, all IBWO all the time. Many good quotes from CLO et al.

I think you will enjoy it.

Oh man, that site is priceless.

dialoguing? I just knew they were into that sort of language...

At last those retarded losers have realised that it's best if they just talk to each other and spare the rest of us their unique brand of 'analysis'

Fantastic. Read the stuff on 'deep flaps and using gravity to accelerate'... it's a killer.

No one is allowed to dissent on the fluffy new forum and i therefore hope no one joins up using a pseudonym and uses the opportunity to give them enough rope... that just wouldn't be funny... despite being able to locate IBWOs, they'd never see it coming

At least no-one in the wider world of birding is now being subjected to their peculiar brand of crap peddled on sites like Bird Forum - they appear to have left en masse...

my work is done there
love and kises always

You could call it incestuous amplification - you could also call it vomit-inducing self-congratulation or preaching to the converted. My favourite quote so far is this from cinclodes which perhaps explains why he can't produce any decent images from his searches:

"Whatever camera you get, I would recommend keeping it packed away until you actually find ivorybills."

Brilliant !!

Let me help on the IBWP mystery. It is extinct. The energy is "far better spent" trying to locate a population of Maryland Darters (Etheostoma sellare). They were last observed in 1989. Not 1944.....If you want to go out on a limb, at least pick a fresh branch.
