Nationwide excitement over a Wood Duck vocalization?

I just noticed this paragraph on page 184 of Jerome Jackson's "In Search of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker":
In 1971, Robert Manns made national news with a report of an ivory-bill having responded to a tape along the Santee River near Columbia. I discussed this report with Manns several years ago and it seems likely to me that the bird responding might have been a wood duck.
This incident may be the same one that is described here.

I recently heard that the 'sightings' at Eglin AFB in Florida in the 60s were by two guys who had very poor reputations in their home state of IL and later admitted to making some bird sightings up.

I've also heard that Robert Manns has a 'less than stellar' reputation in his home state of Georgia. And we all know about Fishcrow. Jesse G. in IL has sightings, but couldn't ID an excellent photo of a Black Vulture. Does anyone see a pattern here?

I only pray that John Arvin is up on his wood duck calls.

Marcus Benkarkis asked what happened to El Carpinterio. I too mourn the loss of his wit. Probably the most inciteful comments were his and/or were motivated to attain his standards.

He was a beloved character here. Long live El Carpinterio!

You will have to read back a ways to learn of his fate. But perhaps he could return. If we all say the "Woodpecker's Prayer" three times and double-knock a few times, maybe he will return.

I know El Carpinterio. El Carpinterio is a friend of mine. Unfortunately, none of us are the Carpinterio.

I too mourn El Carpinterio and wish for his return. But because of that I am vulnerable to thinking any witty incisive post could be his. And if someone steals his nom de blog we will be as vulnerable to misidentification as the TBs.
