I can second these observations. Pileateds have nested near our house for the last several years and we have had exactly the same experience as IslandDad reports. We have had the great pleasure of watching them search for food from an open second-story window at close range. Ours make multiple knocks that to my untrained ear sound exactly like many of the double-knocks attributed to Ivory Billed on some audio files. We also witnessed a large Pileated stripping bark. It was amazing to see so much bark being removed so quickly. There was literally a pile at the base of the trees within minutes.
How about someone who sees and hears pileated gets a recorder and records the knocks - however many there are. You don't have to have a professional system if you are really close. A digital voice recorder would work. Even cheap ones would do because the knock doesn't have the high frequency that the low priced ones miss.
