IN SEARCH OF THE IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER: Join birder Jim Fitzpatrick for lunch as he recounts his sighting of the elusive bird. Noon-2:30 p.m. Sun. $12. Adults only. An optional hike follows. Baker Near-Wilderness Settlement, 4001 County Rd. 24, 1 mile east of County Rd. 19 in Maple Plain. 763-559-6700.(Remember, this was a 100-meter, naked-eye flyby that occurred in April 2004, right around the peak of the Arkansas hysteria.)
From The Grail Bird:
Jim said he was 98.5 percent sure that the bird was an ivory-bill. His attitude was, I just saw a bird I've never seen before. If it wasn't an ivory-bill, please tell me what it was; I'd like to know.

Quack.
Jim Fitzpatrick's talk will be titled: IN SEARCH OF THE IVORY-BILLED WOODPECKER, or WHO NEEDS BINOCULARS ANYWAY?
He will be followed by Melanie Driscoll, who will speak on HOW TO CONVINCE YOURSELF YOU SAW AN IBWO BASED ON ONLY A 0.35 SECOND GLIMPSE,
And then by Casey Taylor on WHY IBWOs ARE MORE EASILY APPROACHED IF THE VIDEOCAM IS IN PLAYBACK MODE
"I just saw a bird I've never seen before. If it wasn't an ivory-bill, please tell me what it was; I'd like to know."
Dear Fitz: If you are really sure it was a species you have never seen before and not just a species you have seen that you didn't have time to identify (the former would require some time to study the bird and the latter could happen with a naked-eye flyby) then I suggest you supply a list of species you have never seen so we might be able to help.
It would seem logical to start examining the part of that list that includes extant species but we could start anywhere on the list that you want.
"Jim Fitzpatrick to recant his "Ivory-bill" sighting"
Now that's a headline I'd like to see.
