Well, that's one reason why a new species NEEDS to be described with a type specimen.
A less lethal method is capturing a bird if reasonably possible, though that might be very tough with an intelligent parrot. Then a whole series of photos, video, and even feather and blood can be collected, yield DNA evidence.
Unfortunately, fakes are much easier in the days of digital photography and PhotoShop.
