It was back in the swamp, along a bayou, where Pete had seen a large black-and-white woodpecker enter a hole in a tall tree snag... He had his faded Peterson bird book half hidden behind his belt. He spoke with authority about what he had seen. His description of the bird was less than complete but tantalizing...My worst fears were confirmed moments later when a bird flew to the tree and entered the hole. It was not a large bird. It certainly was not an ivory-billed woodpecker. It was not even a pileated woodpecker, the usual source of mistaken identity when ivory-bill stories prove to be just that. It was a red-bellied woodpecker.
Believers, this is an absolutely vital point: Do NOT get a good look or photo, and make sure the people you bring to verify your sighting do not get a good look or photo. Reality is not a friend of the Ivory-billed woodpecker.

I like red-bellied woodpeckers. A red-bellied woodpecker is a friend of mine. An Ivory-billed is no red-bellied woodpecker.
