"We saw lots of ivory-billed woodpecker holes"

Check out this December 2006 video of John Ruthven, explaining "the scientific process that was used to search for the ivory-billed woodpecker on his recent trip to the panhandle of Florida".

A related video is available as "John Ruthven 1" here.

I'm not sure if you reported this, but the Ivory-billed Woodpecker Inn in Brinkely is no more. In May, 2007 they renamed themselves the Days Inn & Suites.

hmmm......

In an email exchange with Ruthven a year or two ago he stated his firm belief in the bird, as he had been treated to what was essentially a "guided tour" of the area.
He discounted any analysis of the evidence that pointed elsewhere.
He failed to see an IBWO on that trip, so although his paintings of the IBWO are quite beautiful, they were not done from life.

I finally understand. This is the ultimate snipe hunt ever! It just takes a really, really long time for some people to grasp that they've been "had".

I have an idea. Let's put kazoos in the searchers' mouths and give them bags to catch them. It will be the Boy Scouts x 1000! It has the added bonus of bringing in a live bird if they succeed.

"the amount of birds is greater in Florida."

"they had to have been Ivory-bill woodpecker holes."

Here's what's amazing: all those sightings, all those holes AND they have been analyzing all those droppings. But the DNA shows the droppings are never from Ivory-bills. Good photos never show an Ivory-bill. Good videos never show an Ivory-bill. I just don't understand it.

It really is true that you can fool some of the people all of the time.
