Of course, according to a certain subset of deluded freaks, these recent outbursts of recognition are just the mutterings of "bandwagon skeptics."
Yup. Get ready for the full-blown Phase II of the IBWO Peddlers' pathetic and tired strategy: the inevitable accusations of a "conspiracy" to discredit their "work" accompanied by the efforts of a "dogmatic" majority to "censor" "opposing views."
Blue Crab does make an interesting argument, one I hadn't totally thought though. 27 million isn't just a rounding error in the realm of species recovery efforts and it does elevate the matter to a matter of public policy that is fair game for public discussion and gives it a pretty big news hook to land it back in the press ...
The fact is that the recovery plan is actually one of Fitz's testicles. The other was getting the peice in science - together, the plan and the science piece comprise "his balls" - and to quote Fitzpatrick on this "no one else had the balls". Suddenly the leader of this thing is Fitzpatrick Agonistes.
I see a big problem with the "phase II" proposed above by Invisible Bird - that is that Science Magazine publically humiliated Fitzpatrick with accusations of strong arm tactics, and of knowingly "going for it" with less than irrefutable proof. So USFWS is kind of following a mortally wounded leader
What is the fallout at Sapsucker over this piece? I mean Fitzpatrick must be madder than hell to be outed in this way??
It will be hard for them to accuse others of conspiricy when they have basically just been accused of conspiricy - and by way of answer said, yeah, so what, "no one else had the balls" ...
... they can't turn around and call Science Magazine part of a skeptical cabal to discredit them.
To me it all hinges on whether the NYT runs the story repeating the assertions in "gambling on a ghost bird" ... and since Fitz himself is on record with this as both the biggest story in conservation, and one with HUGE implications for hope itself ... he sure has toted his balls up on a very very high precipice.

Au contraire! Consistency and black kettle issues haven't stopped these folks in the past. I doubt they'll suddenly find their consciences, especially if tens of millions of dollars are at stake.
well of course we will just wait and see, and I never said anything about them "finding their consciences" - I simply think the unquestioned authority of fitzpatrick to set the tone and the direction has been fatally comprimised. This is a HUGE team of people that have been stapled onto this bird's future by Fitz - and many of them, especially the local Hon. this and that have gotten wind of the absurdity.
Fitz problem now is that Science magazine - the catalyst for the claims of objectivity - has pulled a back the curtian from in front of OZ. Oh, what levers and machinations brought us to this point! Dear reader. I've heard a rumor that a copy of Yeats is on Fitz Agonistites desk ...
Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
Another possibilty is that CLO decides that Tom Nelson, and his cabal of anonymous and psedononymous bloggers has actually been a source of "tortious interference" and they sue.
" see here for how this plays out in a different context"
Indeed. That suit has already been withdrawn and the end result is simply another data point proving what you already indicated: when True Believers and their lies are exposed, they become weird and ugly.

Seen it all before ...

I don't think Nelson has much to worry about, but at this point the old saying goes, desperate men do desperate things.
