Australia: Mice head indoors as temperatures drop

Locals desperate to rid homes and commercial premises of mice are clearing traps and baits from shelves as fast as store staff can stack them.

The sales surge follows a massive invasion of pesky rodents seeking shelter indoors.

Although not officially in plague proportions, mice numbers are reported to be at their highest level for five years.

Pest controller Peter Green said good falls of rain prior to Christmas promoted the growth of grasses leading to a significant increase in the rodent population.

“Mice have thrived in ideal conditions but as temperatures drop they are trying to escape the cold by moving indoors,’’ he said.
