IAR Global News - June 2008 - Puffin numbers decreasing
The Isle of May is the largest puffin colony in Britain, with 69,000 pairs of puffins recorded as living there in 2003. Researchers had expected to see 100,000 pairs this year, but the April figures showed just 41,000.
It is suspected that climate change may have reduced the amount of plankton for puffins to feed on, causing many to starve to death.

Plankton form the base of foodwebs on which other species, puffin prey items, feed.
