Tough year for Iowa locavores

Downtown Farmers Market draws 10,000 | GazetteOnline.com - Cedar Rapids, Iowa City
CEDAR RAPIDS - Some 10,000 people turned out for the first Downtown Farmers Market of 2008 on Saturday even though weeks of unseasonably cold and stormy weather had threatened to ruin the party.

"It's been a slow year — all we have is greens," said Melissa Dunham, who was selling arugula, basil and four types of lettuce from Grinnell Heritage Farm.

Dunham said the farm lost some of its produce to hard rain despite its location on high, level ground.

Eric Menzel, a farmer at Salt Fork Farms in Solon, was selling bok choy and helping fellow farmer, Bill Ellison, sell pork and lamb Saturday.

Menzel said Salt Fork Farms also felt the effect of the cold, wet weather — some of his crops failed and others were growing slowly.

"It is quite a challenge to be a vegetable farmer. The scheduling is intense," Menzel said of the short Iowa growing season. "It is not impossible, but a majority of people find it too challenging."
