Column - Nelson’s Trafalgar | Herald Sun Andrew Bolt Blog
BRENDAN Nelson will next week put his leadership on the line by tackling rival Malcolm Turnbull over global warming.
The Opposition Leader plans to tell his MPs their only hope of winning the next election is to attack the Rudd Government over its emissions trading scheme.
He will ask his party to back a tougher line against a scheme the Liberals in fact promised themselves - and which Turnbull, his Treasury spokesman, fiercely defends.
In this showdown it’s expected Nelson will lead the party’s conservatives and warming sceptics, with some likely support from heavyweights Peter Costello and Tony Abbott, against the Liberals’ green-and-wets - led by Turnbull and environment spokesman Greg Hunt.
Backbenchers are believed to be largely behind Nelson, but less so his shadow ministry. Former prime minister John Howard is not declaring his position, but is known to favour a sharper attack on Kevin Rudd’s plans.
Nelson rightly believes the Liberals at the moment are throwing away the one issue that could win them the next election, and are seeming weak on an issue that should be their strength.
