New Zealand: Fossil-fueled helicopters fight late frost
Vineyard managers will have an anxious wait today until the damage of a heavy overnight frost can be accurately gauged.

Frost-fighting helicopters, wind turbines and sprinklers were in full effect until 8am in places, desperately trying to stir up air that had dropped to below zero degrees.

For Crossroads Winery vineyard manager Bryon Strachan it was a long night, although not the first frost of the season.

``We've had six callouts already before this one,' he said this morning, at the end of a 10-hour frost fighting shift.

``The alarm went off at 10.15pm, and we had the choppers up at 2.15am.

``It's been a battle.'

At the winery's Kereru Rd vineyard the mercury dropped to -2.9C, and at Omahu Rd -1.8C.

``She's been a bit of a cold one,' he said.

Mr Strachan said only time would tell if all the nocturnal effort had paid off.

``You just have to fight these things and wait and see. By 2pm we'll know what the verdict is, whether we've won or lost.
